February 23, 2016 – THE BIG SLEEP is a dark film, in both its subject matter and its appearance; much of it takes place at night and in dimly lit rooms. WAC’s 1080p, AVC-encoded Blu-ray features appropriately deep blacks, which, on a properly calibrated display, have gradations that reveal fine detail . . . The film’s lighting style often accentuates the film’s grain texture, but WAC and MPI have treated the grain respectfully and resolved it with clarity.

February 13, 2016 – The Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray of THE BIG SLEEP gives tough guy and film noir fans what they want, a much-improved HD scan of the Bogie-Bacall classic, with a great soundtrack that makes gunshots seem especially loud and nails every Max Steiner cue. All those elaborate exterior/interior sets look much better when properly timed, with the added contrast range of Blu-ray. The digital cleanup and restoration is first rate.
